China is the largest video game market in the world in both revenue and gaming population.
In 2020, the number of gamers in China reached 651 million people, which is more than the population of the US, Japan, Germany, France, and the UK combined. Revenues grew by 6.4 percent year-on-year reaching $29 billion, making up approximately 25% of global gaming revenues.
Mobile games account for 75% of China’s gaming revenues. The popularity of mobile gaming is due to the lower costs of smartphones compared to PCs and consoles. In terms of genre, casual games take the number one spot, with RPG and action games taking second and third places, respectively.
LOCALISING VIDEO GAMES FOR CHINA
There are many factors to take into consideration when localising your game for the China market, some of them include:
Politics: A number of games have been banned for “smearing the image of China”. Topics that are off-limits include China’s territorial borders, Tibet and the Dalai Lama, Xinjiang, Tiananmen Square, Taiwan, Chairman Mao, and the Cultural Revolution.
Censorship: Games which show blood, skulls, skeletons, drugs, gambling, and sexual themes are likely to be banned in China.
Simplified vs Traditional: Simplified Chinese is used in Mainland China, whereas Traditional Chinese is used in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
